Health insurance
All residents of Belgium are legally required to have health insurance coverage.
EU students
• Required documentation: Bring proof of health insurance, such as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), or Medicare, to a Belgian public health insurance company (mutuelle) of your choice.
• Action required: Request this from your local health insurance provider before leaving your country. Generally, EU citizens only need to pay a supplementary fee.
For non-EU students
• Required documentation: You must have health insurance valid in Belgium.
• Visa requirement: To obtain your visa, provide proof of health insurance covering at least the first three months of your stay. Acceptable options include Schengen-type insurance (e.g., Globe Partner, Expat & Co) or proof of future coverage with a Belgian public health insurance company. The latter costs around €12 per month. For assistance, contact the International Welcome Desk at welcome@ulb.be .
Repatriation insurance
• Coverage information: The Belgian public health insurance company covers most medical expenses in Belgium but does not cover repatriation to your home country in case of illness or accident.
• Action required: Consider purchasing private repatriation insurance either in your home country or in Belgium. Check the policy details carefully, especially regarding the duration of coverage abroad.
Property insurance for tenants
As a tenant, you should consider property insurance to cover your personal contents, liability, or both, providing protection against potential damage or loss and meeting rental contract requirements.
Family insurance
Family insurance protects you against financial liability if someone is harmed due to your negligence. It also includes personal legal assistance to help you seek compensation if you are injured due to someone else’s fault.
Civil liability insurance (assurance responsabilité civil):
ULB students are automatically covered by civil liability insurance for all their university-related activities. Here you will find the insurance certificate.
Bodily injury insurance (assurance dommages corporels):

• Action required: In the event of an accident, please complete the required form and send it to the ULB insurance department.
As a VUB guest student in a joint master’s program, you are covered by bodily injury insurance on the VUB campusunder ULB's insurance.
